What are web standards and why should we care?

Although the Internet and web pages have been around for years a specific standard for their development and more importantly how the major browsers interpret that standard has been a long time coming. Finally that time has arrived.

These web standards increase the interoperability of the web and standardise the structure of web documents separating style from content. This all helps to make the same web page accessible through many different browsers as well as many different devices.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) open external link in a new window outlined the set of web standards and their increased adoption is thanks to organisations such as the Web Standards Project (WaSP) open external link in a new window.
